BRISTOL, Tenn. –
It was 27 months in the making for the Wildcats. Although a few days later than expected, Fort Valley State took the men's volleyball court for the inaugural time Saturday afternoon and played a highly-competitive match at King University, but fell, 3-0.

After some scheduling shuffling including Wednesday's projected season opener postponed, the Wildcats (0-1) donned the uniforms for the first time since the program was announced in the fall of 2019. FVSU battled King in the afternoon, but dropped the straight-sets match (17-25, 17-25, 15-25).

In the opening set, FVSU trailed 9-8 midway through the set and was down only 12-10, before King (1-1) scored four of the next five points to separate by five points. The Tornado claimed the inaugural Wildcats set, 17-25, by not allowing the visitors to put back-to-back points together in the final part of the set.

On the day, Jaxson Hicks led FVSU with eight kills, five digs and a block assist. Oshane Farquharson downed six kills and had two blocks, while Jamil Scott registered five kills. Justin Yates handed out 22 assists and dug three attacks. Jae Henderson had a team-high six digs.

In set two, Hicks downed a kill to tie set 2, 7-7. The set was again tied four points later, 9-9, before King strung together six points in a row and a 15-9 advantage. Another Hicks winner pulled the Wildcats to within 17-15, but the Tornado sweep seven of the next eight and eight of 10 points to finish the match.

Farquharson killed a point to give FVSU its first lead, 2-1, early in the third set. King followed with the next five points and a 13-3 run overall to lead 14-5. The Tornado rode the run to the third set win, 25-15, to complete the match.

FVSU will have to wait until next Friday, Jan. 21, to try again for its first victory. FVSU plays on its home HPE Arena court for the first time in a 6 p.m. match versus Tusculum College.
