Morehouse Takes Fiery Battle from FVSU

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The young Wildcats are proving to be no easy out as it proved again Monday night. More experienced Morehouse College took advantage of its second-half opportunities and held off a Fort Valley State comeback in a fiery Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball battle.

After a pair of Joe Williams free throws, the Maroon Tigers (12-6/9-2 SIAC East) doubled a five-point lead into 10 points, 59-49, with 13:01. The visiting advantage drew to 14 points, 72-58 and 74-60, before FVSU (3-13/3-6 SIAC East) netted the next six of seven points to cut it down to nine, 75-66, with 4:15. The Wildcats, though, were unable to get any closer in the final minutes.

K.J. Doucet hit 6 of 13 attempts, including a trio of 3-pointers, for 19 points to go with five rebounds. Williams was perfect from the floor by making all six field goals and 3 for 3 from the charity stripe for a season-best 15 points and grabbed five rebounds. Pierre Mitchell added 14 points and five assists.

The Maroon Tigers put five players in double figures led by Kerry Richardson's 22 points.

Off a mid-first half run, the Wildcats rushed to a double-digit lead twice, 23-13 and 25-15, 10:33 into the evening. Morehouse College chipped away until it hit a 3-pointer with nine seconds, stole the inbounds pass and laid it in at the horn for a 42-38 intermission tally.

FVSU remains at home where it plays a Saturday afternoon, January 30, contest against Allen University. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
