Wildcats Upset Tigers, Win Final 3 Sets

SAVANNAH, Ga. – It turned out to be the biggest night of the 2022 season to this point Wednesday night. After a tough opening set, Fort Valley State finished the next three sets strong and upset host Savannah State, 3-1, in Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's volleyball.

The Tigers (10-9) took the opening set, 25-12, before the Wildcats (5-18) rebounded with three-straight solid finishes in taking the win with scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 26-24.

Individually, Destinee Jackson pounded 16 kills to go with 12 digs, three blocks and two aces. Raven Edwards also hit double-digit kills with 10. Jayda Mikell recorded a season-high eight total blocks to go with five kills and three digs.

Michelle Lynch served two important aces, while she had three kills and 14 digs. Sarah Rosario dug a season-high 26 offensive attacks and Kaila Copeland had 14 digs. Laiani McCullough handed out 31 assists and dug nine balls.

Allena Norton led Savannah State with 16 kills, six digs and three blocks.

The Tigers went out to an early 6-2 lead and held a 20-8 advantage before taking the first set, 25-12.

FVSU responded in set two with an early 8-4 lead before Jackson pounded a kill to make it 14-8. A Lynch ace made it 18-11 for the visitors and the score was 23-22 before back-to-back errors end the set, 25-22.

FVSU continued to play well with early leads of 10-5, 13-8, 15-10 and 16-11 in the third set. Savannah State came back to tie the set at 22, before a Mikell kill, Setene Green kill and then a Mikell solo block gave FVSU the final three tallies (25-22).

The home team led the fourth set, 14-10, only to see the Wildcats respond to tie it at 15. After an 18-16 disappeared and it trailed 24-23, FVSU saw Jackson hit a winner, Lynch lace her second ace and a Savannah State attack error ended the match in the 26-24 final.

FVSU will now be off until hit hosts Benedict College on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 23, in a 3 p.m. match.
