Wildcats Capture Final Two Sets, Bounce Tigers in Five

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats seem to be putting things together as the season goes on. For the third time in four matches, Fort Valley State came out on the winning women's volleyball end as it captured the final two sets and bounced Benedict College, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon.

Tied at 25-25 in set four, the Wildcats took advantage of a Tigers attack error, before Michelle Lynch downed the set-clinching point with a kill for the 27-25 final. After falling behind 2-0 in the match-deciding set, FVSU rattled off seven-straight tallies and never trailed on the way to a 15-10 final score to win the match, 3-2.

After Wildcats opening set win, 25-23, the Tigers gained the momentum to take a 2-1 lead by scores of 25-20 and 25-16.

With the win, FVSU (6-18) has put together its first win streak of the season after it upset Savannah State on the road Thursday night, 3-1. The Wildcats also have claimed victories in three of their last four matches.

Individually, Morgan Gooden downed 12 kills to go with three blocks and an ace. Raven Edwards also hit double-digits in kills with 10 and dug five attacks. Lynch added eight winners along with three blocks, two assists and two digs. Destinee Jackson and Setene Green came off the bench for seven kills and 10 digs and five kills, two aces and a block.

Laiani McCullough handed out 30 assists to go with three aces, four digs, three kills and two blocks. Kaila Copeland chipped in 11 assists and five aces.

Cana Smith led Benedict with 18 kills.

FVSU has off until it hosts Allen University on Thursday evening, Oct. 27, in a 5 p.m. match.
