Blazers Use Pair of Runs, Pull Away from Wildcats in Opener

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Wildcats started their 2022-23 campaign with a tough final. In the men's basketball Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Gulf South Conference Crossover, Valdosta State used 14-2 first half run and a key 12-0 run with 11 minutes left in the game to key its 85-58 victory over Fort Valley State Saturday night.

FVSU (0-1) started strong and led by as many as five, 7-2, on a Quincy Young layin, and then a six-point margin, 11-5, after a Myson Lowe layup at 4:53 into the night. The Wildcats continued to lead following a Chris Volo bucket, 20-19, before the Blazers (1-2) netted 14 of the next 16 tallies and never trailed in the final 28:32 of the contest.

After trailing by 12 points at half, the Wildcats did cut the difference down to 10 points, 55-45, at 11:10 showing. Valdosta State, though, had the answer with the next 12 points to pull away from the team in Blue and Gold.

In his first game as a Wildcat, Lowe scored a team-high 16 points, with 12 in the first half, on 6 of 9 shooting and 3 of 5 from long-range. K.J. Doucet added 11 points and four boards. P.J. Mitchell and Rob Kendrick chipped in six points apiece. Jamal Reynolds had five points on back-to-back possessions. Quincy Young, who had four points, and Khadim Samb pulled down five rebounds each.

After it made almost 54-percent in the opening 20 minutes, FVSU connected on only 9 of 31 shots in the second stanza. The Wildcats also committed 18 turnovers, while the Blazers made 34 of 58 from the field (58.6%).

Leading Valdosta State, Jacolbey Owens scored 23 points and handed out eight assists. Jay Rucker also had 18 points and five rebounds.

FVSU returns to action Sunday evening, Nov. 13, against the weekend host, West Florida, starting at 7:30 p.m.
