Wilson & Durham Garner SIAC Football Major Hardware, FVSU Tops SIAC with 12 All-Conference Honorees

11/14/2022 1:33:00 PM

ATLANTA, Ga. – The best gridiron campaign in The Valley in a decade was a result of a special group of talented players. Fort Valley State's Emanuel Wilson and Kelvin Durham picked up the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Football major hardware with the Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors as the team received seven First Team and five Second Team honorees to receive the highest team total of any of the 13 league members.

With an 8-2 record, the highest program win total since 2012, FVSU, first-year Head Coach Shawn Gibbs and his coaching staff exceeded all preseason predictions for the Wildcats. The 12 All-SIAC Wildcat players were a big part of the success, which included the victory over rival Albany State in the Fountain City Classic to finish the 2022 regular season.

Along with Wilson and Durham, FVSU put five others on the All-SIAC First Team in offensive lineman Emanuel Boone, tight end Gentry Sparks, defensive end Tim Alderman, defensive back Tyler Moore and kicker Rodney Williams, Jr. The Wildcats depth did not stop there as another five of FVSU's best made the Second Team in offensive lineman Jay'Shaun Booker, wide receiver Cornintheus Edmonds, linebackers Kentrell Lawson and Dialo Mosley and punt returner Hakeem Ellington.

Leading the way, Wilson proved to be the best running back of the SIAC and one of the top in all of NCAA Division II. The Charlotte, N.C., native grabbed the SIAC Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year awards. The All-SIAC First Team back ranks in the top 10 of NCAA DII in all-purpose yards (6th, 161.0 ypg), rushing yards per game (7th, 137.1 ypg), rushing yards (7th, 1,371 yards) and rushing touchdowns (9th, 17 TDs). The SIAC's leader by over 34 yards per game on the ground, Wilson led the Conference in scoring (11.4 ppg) to go with being the top in the other rushing categories. He also pulled in 24 passes for 239 yards receiving and two more scores. The redshirt junior registered his two 200-plus rushing games against two of the three best teams FVSU faced with 262 yards against Tuskegee, which was five yards short of the single game school record, and 221 yards versus Albany State. Even against the SIAC Champion and top seed in the NCAA DII Super Region 2, Wilson carried 20 times for 108 yards against Benedict College. Rounding out his accolades, Wilson became the first 1,000-yard Wildcat rusher since 2004 and third most in a FVSU single season.

In his first season as the general of the Wildcat attack, Durham (Homestead, Fla.) grew each week to his selection as both the SIAC Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. The redshirt freshman was voted the top at his position to the All-SIAC First Team after he passed for 1,994 yards on 147 of 242 passes for 16 touchdowns to only four interceptions. Kelvin finished with a 148.47 passer efficiency rating and he rushed for another 258 yards on 44 attempts with three rushing touchdowns. Durham even caught an 11-yard pass against Albany State. The FVSU quarterback's top passing game came against Allen University with 334 yards passing on 20 of 32 passes and three touchdowns. He also threw for 280 yards against both Central State and Clark Atlanta and passed for a season-best five scores and 255 yards versus Morehouse.

Anchoring the FVSU offensive line the past four years, Boone makes his third-straight season on the All-SIAC First Team. The Macon, Ga., product helped clear the way for Wilson's production and protection of Durham for the Wildcats to have the SIAC's top total offense at 393.9 yard per game.

The top pass-catcher of his position, Sparks (Tallahassee, Fla.) received his first All-SIAC First Team award. The tight end pulled in 14 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown in his first year starting for the Wildcats. The sophomore pulled in at least one reception in nine of the team's 10 games with a season-high three catches and 37 yards with his touchdown against Morehouse College. He added two grabs against each of Allen, Clark Atlanta and Benedict. His four-quarter reception against Albany State gave FVSU the game-sealing first down with two minutes left in the game.

Turning to the defense, one of the top two Conference defensive linemen, Alderman, was voted to his first appearance on the All-SIAC First Team. After a solid true freshman year, the 2022 All-SIAC Preseason Second Team member did not disappoint. Alderman finished second in the league with 14 tackles for loss, double his total from a year ago, and 7.5 sacks, also double from 2021, while he helped FVSU record the top SIAC run defense at 115.5 yards allowed per game. The Fort Valley, Ga., hometown product also increased his total tackles to 44 and led the Wildcats with 14 quarterback hurries. His top tackle game he saved for Albany State with six to go with a big fourth-quarter sack and a first-half fumble recovery in the contest.

Returning to the All-SIAC teams and to the First Team for his inaugural time, Moore (Ashburn, Ga.) earned a repeat honor after leading the FVSU defense in tackles for the second year in a row. The senior safety posted 65 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and seven pass breakups in 10 games. The 2021 All-SIAC Second Teamer posted his top tackle game with 10 against SIAC Champion Benedict College to go with a tackle for loss and two breakups. He also had nine stops against Kentucky State and intercepted a pass versus SIAC West champ Tuskegee.

Stepping into the Wildcat kicking specialist as a true freshman, Williams proved to be up to the task. The young kicker from Covington, Ga., led the SIAC in scoring by kickers (5.8 ppg) and third overall scoring per game. The two-time SIAC Special Teams Player of the Week converted a league-best seven field goals and finished second with 34 point after attempts made. His top performance came when he went 3 for 3 in field goals, 5 for 5 in point after attempts and averaged 45.7 yards per punt with one of 63 yards in a victory at Bluefield State.

Staying with special teams, Ellington (Summerville, S.C.) starts the FVSU list of All-SIAC Second Team members at punt returner. The 2022 All-SIAC Preseason Second Team punt returner showed he was up to the early season attention. Ellington returned 16 punts for 110 yards along with another 11 kick-off returns for 248 yards (22.55 yard per return). The redshirt junior averaged 6.9 yards per punt return and he had a long return of 32 yards. The wide receiver also caught 11 passes for 175 yards and two touchdowns.

Returning to the gridiron this fall, Booker of Macon, Ga., gave FVSU another honored offensive lineman to help the offensive unit's success. Joining Boone, the offensive guard landed on the All-SIAC Second Team where he made Wilson's running lanes and the time for Durham to pass as part of the top SIAC total offensive unit of 393.9-yard per game attack.

Coming to The Valley this season, Edmonds (Atlanta, Ga.) became Durham's top receiving target in the FVSU offense. The All-SIAC Second Team wide receiver finished with a team-best 657 yards on 34 catches and three touchdowns. He averaged 19.3 yards per catch and 65.7 yards receiving per game. The one-time SIAC Newcomer of the Year recorded four 100-plus yard games with seven catches for 143 yards and a score versus Allen, three grabs for 109 yards at Bluefield State, seven receptions for 129 yards at Central State and another six catches for 114 yards and a touchdown at Clark Atlanta.

The FVSU linebacking corps are in good hands for the next couple seasons with both Lawson and Mosley leading it. The two All-SIAC Second Team members combined for 111 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks and five quarterback hurries. Lawson, a sophomore from Marianna, Fla., registered 55 stops with 5.5 tackles for loss and a sack from the middle backer spot. The one-time SIAC Newcomer of the Week recorded his top tackle total of 13 against Savannah State, while he had 11 versus Morehouse College, seven against Tuskegee and six at Clark Atlanta.

Mosley posted 56 tackles of his own, second most on the Wildcats defense. The Atlanta, Ga., true freshman started all 10 FVSU game at outside linebacker. Along with his tackle total, the one-time SIAC Newcomer of the Week honoree added 3.5 tackles for loss and a pass breakup. He registered his season-best tackle total of 13 with 2.5 for loss against SIAC Champ Benedict College and added 11 more tackles against Morehouse and nine stops versus Kentucky State.
