Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Hurricanes First-Half Finish and Long-Range Shooting Dooms Wildcats

AMERICUS, Ga. – After a frustrating opening weekend, the Wildcats looked to rebound Wednesday night. Georgia Southwestern had other plans as it ended the first half on a 12-2 run and drained a half dozen second-half treys to defeat Fort Valley State, 72-52, in men's basketball.

K.J. Doucet hit a pair of free throws and downed a 3-pointer to give the Wildcats (0-3) its largest first-half lead, 26-21, with 3:27 to go. The home Hurricanes (2-1) turned around the finish of the first half with the next seven points and 12 of the final 14 points for a 33-28 intermission difference. Ga. Southwestern hit a trio of treys in the first five second-half minutes to double the margin, before it sealed the contest in the final seven minutes.

Doucet scored 13 of his FVSU best 18 points in the first half and connected on 9 of 10 free throws. Joe Williams banked in 4 of 6 attempts for eight points to go with seven rebounds. Pierre Mitchell, who had three assists, and JaMarcus Scott chipped in six tallies apiece. Myson Lowe grabbed six boards.

Jarrett Adderton led all scorers with 21 points, including four 3-pointers for the Hurricanes.

Ga. Southwestern made 10 of 24 treys and 14 of 16 from the charity stripe. FVSU was not as successful with only 3 of 19 from 3-point range, 17 of 55 from the floor and 15 of 25 free throws.

Trailing 47-37 midway in the second half, Williams laid in a basket and followed with a dunk on back-to-back possessions to pull FVSU to within six, 47-41, at 11:47. After a media timeout, Ga. Southwestern hit long-range buckets around a Scott jumper to push it back to a 10-point lead, 53-43.

FVSU pulled back to within eight points, 53-45 and 55-47, in the following possessions only to see Ga. Southwestern net the next eight points to make it 63-47 at 5:10 and ice the game away.

FVSU makes its first home appearance this Friday night, Nov. 18, in a 7:30 p.m. matchup against Paine College.
