Wildcats Put Points on the Board, Prevail over Badgers

MOBILE, Ala. – The Wildcats scored their most points in five years and produced the Monday night victory. Behind its best shooting night of the early season, Fort Valley State went on a 12-point scoring run midway through the second half and rode it to a 94-85 men's hoops win at Spring Hill College.

Tied at 58 during he 11:23 media timeout, FVSU (3-4/2-0 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East) turned to the combo of Myson Lowe and Khadim Samb, who combined for the contest's next 12 points in only 2:47 for a 70-58 advantage. Spring Hill (2-4/0-2 SIAC West) pulled to within seven points, 79-72, on a three-point play with 4:13 remaining. The Wildcats, though, saw Lowe hit a jumper and Samb add a pair of free throws to answer and take away the victory.

FVSU's 94 points was its highest win total in five years and three days since it defeated Kentucky State, 92-75, on November 25, 2017. The Wildcats hit 90-plus points for the first time since losing to then No. 6-ranked Valdosta State, 111-98, on December 10, 2018.

Lowe and Samb combined for 44 points on 13 of 21 shooting, six rebounds and eight assists. Lowe knocked down a trio of 3-pointers on six tries, 8 of 13 from the floor overall and 8 for 8 from the foul line for 27 points to go with eight assists and three boards. Samb made 5 of 8 shots and all six of his foul shots for 17 points along with three rebounds.

K.J. Doucet added 15 points despite foul trouble most of the night. Joe Williams and Jamal Reynolds were 6 for 6 shooting between them with eight points apiece and had five and four rebounds. JaMarcus Scott and Rob Kendrick contributed seven and five points.

On the night, FVSU made 27 of 47 attempts (57.4%), 9 of 16 from long-range and 31 of 35 foul shots (89%).

Spring Hill had a dynamic duo of Beril Kabamba and Tana Kopa hit for 28 and 27 points of the team's 85.

FVSU trailed only 2:38 of the game's 40 minutes. The Badgers led for 2:17 in the opening half before a Lowe 3-pointer made gave the Wildcats back the lead, 19-18. Spring Hill edged ahead, 50-49, and held it for 21 seconds before Lowe, again, hit a top-of-the-key 3-pointer and 52-50 FVSU margin. The game was tied at both 52-52 and 58-58 until the 12-0 FVSU run for the needed separation.

FVSU makes its second home appearance at HPE Arena on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 3, against LeMoyne-Owen College. Tip is set for 3 p.m.
