Kentucky State Downs Key Treys, Hands FVSU Late Defeat

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Late-game shooting proved the difference Thursday night. Kentucky State downed three-straight 3-pointers over a 1:31 time period late and handed Fort Valley State its first Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men's basketball defeat, 82-75.

After FVSU's K.J. Doucet connected on a jumper to retie the game at 65 with 4:53 left, Kentucky State (5-1/4-1 SIAC West) made a free throw and then a trio of 3-pointers to outscore the visitors, 10-4, since the tie for a 75-69 difference. The Thorobreds added a pair of dunks for the game's biggest margin, 79-69, at 2:12 showing. The Wildcats (6-5/4-1 SIAC East) kept battling but they made only 4 of 8 from the foul line down the stretch.

The FVSU loss snaps the team's five-game win streak, tying its longest victory run in almost six years. The Wildcats also fell for the first time when scoring more than 59 points and first defeat since a 61-59 late-road loss at North Georgia on November 22.

Point guard Myson Lowe pumped in 5 of 9 treys and 8 of 16 field goals for a team-high 21 points to go with four rebounds and four assists for the Wildcats. Doucet chipped in 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out two assists.

Joe Williams added nine points on 4 of 5 shooting and pulled down six board. Jamarcus Scott finished with seven points and six rebounds, while both Khadim Samb and Jamal Reynolds had six points.

The Thorobreds drained 11 of 23 long-range attempts compared to the Wildcats' 6 of 20. FVSU also made only 15 of 30 free throws.

Shamon Mosley paced Kentucky State with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Five minutes into the contest, Kentucky State held a 12-6 edge. FVSU ran off the next 13 points in a row to make it, 19-12, capped by Quincy Young's 3-point play. The Wildcats enjoyed their largest lead of the night, 25-16, with 4:25 remaining in the first half only to see the home team answer with a 14-1 run and eventual 33-30 intermission advantage.

FVSU has off Friday before it completes the northern crossover weekend on Saturday afternoon, Dec. 15, in a 3 p.m. tilt at Central State.
