Wildcats Use Strong Second-Half over Marauders, Return to Win Column

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Wildcats didn't let a Thursday night stumble affect them on Saturday afternoon. Fort Valley State used a strong second-half performance and returned to the win column with an 80-75 men's basketball win at Central State.

Tied at 52 with 6:50 into the second half, FVSU went on the key spurt with the next seven points off a Myson Lowe layup, a pair of JaMarcus Scott free throws and a K.J. Doucet triple to go ahead, 59-52. The Wildcats' lead grew to as many as 10 points twice, 66-56 and 68-58, before another pair of Scott free throws sealed the road victory from the host Marauders.

With its seventh win of the first semester, FVSU (7-5) takes six more victories into the holiday break than a season ago. The Wildcats also improved to a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East-leading 5-1 mark.

Lowe and Doucet pumped in 16 points apiece for the Wildcats. Lowe made 7 of 12 of his shots, including two treys, to go with four assists. Doucet drained three triples on his day and five rebounds.

Quincy Young, Khadim Samb and Chris Volo combined for 25 points and 20 rebounds on the inside. Young hit for double figures for the first time this season with 11 as Samb (9 rebounds) and Volo each had eight. Scott was the fourth double-digit Wildcat with 11 tallies with 5 of 6 from the charity stripe in the second half. Guard Jamal Reynolds also added eight points, nine boards and two assists.

FVSU made 31 of 57 shots for the game with 16 of 27 (59.3%) in the final 20 minutes. The visitors held Central State (3-6/3-3 SIAC West) to only 35.7% (10 of 28) from the field in the latter stanza.
The Marauders received 19 and 18 points from Willie Jackson and Marcus Scott.

FVSU trailed by five points early, 13-8, but it battled back to take a 21-20 advantage on back-to-back Volo points from a dunk and two free throws at 11;04. Central State held a lead of as many as 11 points, 38-27, before FVSU cut it to a six-point, 41-35, margin by halftime.

FVSU will now be off for 13 days until it hosts Fort Lauderdale College on Friday afternoon, Dec. 30, in a 3 p.m. tip.
