Eagles Surprise Wildcats in Second Half

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – In the last showing of 2022, the Wildcats will have their resolution list ready after Friday's second half. After trailing by 10 points at the half, the University of Fort Lauderdale surprised Fort Valley State in the latter half and prevailed, 71-59, in men's basketball Friday afternoon.

The Eagles (6-11) opened the second 20 minutes on an 18-3 run over the first 6:57 to burst on top, 47-42. A K.J. Doucet layup tied the game for FVSU, 55-55, with 5:06 left. Fort Lauderdale's Benez Woodard hit one trey and banked home a second over a 56-second time span as the visitors won the final five minutes, 16-4, for the win.

Doucet finished with a game-best 20 points for FVSU (7-6) with 9 of 13 from the foul line to go with seven rebounds and three assists. Khadim Samb added 13 points on 4 of 6 shooting and six rebounds, while Jamal Reynolds had 11 points, all in the first half.

FVSU committed a season-high 26 turnovers with five in the first five minutes of the second half and 14 total in the second stanza. The Eagles netted 16 of 28 attempts in the second half and outrebounded the host, 34-29.

Both Trevon White and Kemari Brown scored 16 points apiece for Fort Lauderdale.

FVSU built a lead of as many as 12 points twice, 32-20 and 34-22, down the final six minutes of the first half and seemed to be in control of the game. The Wildcats took a 10-point, 39-29, to intermission.

FVSU will now be off until it hosts Miles College on Wednesday night, Jan. 4, in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
