Wildcats Prevail in OT over Dragons

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats are returning to a level they have not in nearly five calendar years. After trailing by five points with 2:32 left, Fort Valley State scored the next seven points, and went to overtime and prevailed over Lane College, 80-74, in men's Monday night basketball action.

Returning to the lineup with four fouls at the final 3:32 media timeout, K.J. Doucet sparked the Wildcats with a free throw and a deep 3-pointer to pull his team to within two, 65-63. Joe Williams would not be denied on the glass late in the game as he pulled a Wildcat miss down, converted it and added the foul shot for the conventional 3-point play for FVSU's first lead, 66-65, in over 16 minutes of the second half. After Doucet made 1 of 2 free throws with 32 seconds, Lane had a jumper roll in and forced overtime tied at 67-67.

FVSU never trailed in the extra five-minute period. Following each team making three points for another tie at 70, Jamal Reynolds knifed into the lane to bank home a driving layup, before Williams stole the ball and found Myson Lowe for a corner trey for a 75-70 advantage and the Wildcats never looked back the final 2:53.

With the fourth win in a row, FVSU goes over the .500 mark at 5-4 for the first time since February 3, 2018 when the program defeated Paine College at home, 66-58, to go to 13-12 during the 2017-18 campaign. The Wildcats also improved to 4-0 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference East Division.

Despite missing the middle 13:15 of the second half with foul trouble, Doucet maximized his 29 minutes of action with a game-best 25 points, his second 20-point effort of the season, on 7 of 13 shooting, a pair of 3-pointers on three tries, and 9 of 12 from the foul line. He also pulled down eight rebounds, handed out two assists and swiped two balls.

Lowe made 5 of 10 from the floor with a trio from long-range for 15 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Khadim Samb added 12 points and nine boards. For the first time as a Wildcat, Williams recorded a double-double with 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting and grabbed 11 rebounds, seven offensive.

Justin Sylvester guided the Dragons (4-4/2-3 SIAC West) with 17 points and nine rebounds.

FVSU will have the rest of the week off for finals before it hosts Toccoa Falls College next Monday, December 12, in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
