FVSU Runs Out of Time in Late Charge, Morehouse Takes Decision

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats gained momentum and steam too late Monday night for success. Following a close first half, Fort Valley State charged back from a double-digit deficit, but it ran out of time to complete the task as Morehouse College held on for the 78-70 men's hoops win.
 
After a 10-0 Maroon Tigers (16-6/13-2 SIAC East) run midway in the second stanza made it a 16-point difference, the Wildcats (5-18/4-10 SIAC East) cut six points off it in a minute (65-55) and at the 3:55 mark (73-63). Ty'Reek Johnson put the margin under double figures, 74-66, at 1:23, before K.J. Doucet took two more tallies off with a pair of free throws, 74-68, with 41 seconds. Morehouse netted two foul shots with 32 seconds, before a Pierre Mitchell layup kept it at six points, 76-70, with 12 seconds but the visitors ran out of time to finish the comeback.
 
Despite a tough night shooting, Doucet recorded 19 points, 12 of 16 from the foul line, to go with nine rebounds, two assists and two steals. Mitchell added 15 points, including three treys, five rebounds and two assists. Kenton Eskridge chipped in 13 points and three assists.
 
Billy Thomas led all scorers with 24 points on the strength of six triples for the Maroon Tigers.
 
The Wildcats tough shooting night resulted in a 20 of 70 outing from the field, including only 8 of 35 in the game-deciding second half.
 
FVSU has a week off before it returns to Atlanta next Tuesday night, Feb. 22, in a 7:30 p.m. contest at Clark Atlanta.
