Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Ride Big 1st Half, Record Road Win Over Panthers

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats started their engines early Tuesday night and used that success the rest of the night. Fort Valley State blistered the first-half nets and rode it to an important men's basketball road win, 63-56, over Clark Atlanta.

Quincy Young dropped the first of him making all four attempts on the night to begin the Wildcats (6-18/5-10 SIAC East) netting the first seven points of the game. After leading by 15 points at intermission, FVSU increased the margin twice to 22 points, 51-29 and 54-32, before Clark Atlanta (11-14/5-11 SIAC East) chipped away in the final 10 minutes. The home Panthers cut the difference to as little as five points, but it came with 35 seconds as K.J. Doucet pulled down the defensive rebound and made both ensuing free throws with 11 ticks to seal the visitors' deal.

Kenton Eskridge was the first-half story as he connected on all four 3-pointer attempts and hit 6 of 8 on the night for his season-best 20-point Wildcat effort. Doucet grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his nine tallies. Young added nine points of his own on 4 of 4 from the floor, three rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Pierre Mitchell, Ty'Reek Johnson and Jamarcus Scott chipped in six points, while Joe Williams hauled in seven rebounds.

Chris Martin record the night's lone double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Panthers.

FVSU connected on 16 of 26 field goals at a 61.5% clip in the opening 20 minutes. At the same time, the Wildcats held the home team to 9 of 36 (25.0%) in the first half.

Following the opening seven points, FVSU took a 9-7 edge to a more comfortable 18-7 lead at 10:24 of the first half on a Scott trey. The Wildcats then finished the half with 14 of the final 17 points, including the final five, capped by a Mitchell triple with seven seconds left for a 39-24 score.

Scott, first, and then Eskridge, after him, drained 3-pointers for what would be FVSU's largest leads of 51-29 (15:12) and 54-32 (11:55). From the second trey, Clark Atlanta netted the next 10 points to make the final 6:22 interesting.

FVSU will log its final regular season road game Thursday night, Feb. 24. The Wildcats travel across Georgia to face the Tigers of Savannah State in a 7:30 p.m. tip.
