Savannah State Hangs on Over FVSU Men’s Basketball

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a battle of runs and back-and-forth momentum the whole night, the Wildcats stumbled in the final moments. After back-to-back Quincy Young buckets made it a one-point margin, Fort Valley State came up empty on its final eight possessions to allow Savannah State to hang on for the 62-57 Thursday evening men's basketball contest.
 
FVSU (6-19/5-11 SIAC East) held a seven-point lead, 34-27, with 47 seconds left in the first half and reversed a Savannah State opening second-half run with its own and a second similar advantage, 46-39, with 11:45 remaining. The Tigers netted 13 of the next 15 tallies for a 52-48 edge 4:34 later. Young's consecutive baskets with 3:53 made FVSU down by a point, 57-56, but two turnovers in a row and misfiring on the final six shot attempts prevented from a visitor victory.
 
K.J. Doucet guided the Wildcats attack with 17 points and six rebounds. Pierre Mitchell was the lone other double-figure scorer with 10 points to go with five assists and three rebounds. Kenton Eskridge chipped in eight points, three rebounds and three steals. Young finished with seven tallies and five boards.
 
Both Marcus Scott and Eleik Bowles posted 10 points apiece for Savannah State.
 
FVSU will complete its regular season at home for Spring Homecoming 22 this Saturday afternoon, Feb. 26, in a 3 p.m. tilt versus Tuskegee University.
