Wildcats Take One of Three at CIAA/SIAC Softball Challenge Opening Days

HAMPTON, Ga. – The Wildcats tested their mettle in a weekend series outside the Conference. Fort Valley State squeezed a win over Shaw between tough results against Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State of the CIAA/SIAC Softball Challenge.
 
In an early Friday evening tilt, Winston-Salem State used a big first inning to power past FVSU (3-6), 14-6 in 5 inn. On Saturday, FVSU claimed a 7-2 victory over Shaw University before it suffered a close, 6-5, defeat to Fayetteville State.
 
In the three contests, the Wildcats saw six players register hits in multiple games. Leading the way. Rasheedah Hasan blasted a 3-run home run in the first game and added a double and single versus Shaw. Laila Lavette produced two 2 for 3 games with a double, while Kaitlyn Gardner went 3 for 5 with her own double. Both Ja'Necia Barber and Meghan Holland lined doubles as part of their two hits. Destiny Fitzpatrick added three singles and Tiffany Rose had two.
 
Caprice Johnson logged the best pitching performance with a complete game, four-hitter against Shaw. The junior did not allow an earned run and fanned seven without a walk.
 
vs. Winston-Salem State
After a nine-run home first, the Rams held a big 9-0 lead. In the top of the second, Hasan belted her 3-run homer to right field, but the Wildcats could only muster run-scoring hits from Gardner and Cruz in the third and fourth.
 
vs. Shaw
Trailing 1-0 after two frames, Hasan raced home to tie the game on a passed ball, before Rose laid down a bunt single for a 2-1 lead. Holland added a two-run double in the fifth and Gardner laced a RBI-double in the seventh of the win.
 
vs. Fayetteville State
Behind 4-2 in the top of the sixth, Lavette pulled FVSU within a run on a double, before Holland reached on an infield error to score the tying run, 4-4. Pinch runner Alisha Fabin touched home with the go-ahead score, 5-4, on a passed ball.
 
The FVSU lead was short lived as Fayetteville state pushed across a pair in the home sixth and set down the the three batters in order of the top of the seventh for the 6-5 win.
FVSU was scheduled to play Bowie State on Sunday to wrap up the weekend Challenge.
