FVSU Splits Softball Twinbill with Paine College

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats scored in 11 of 13 at bats Saturday afternoon. Fort Valley State pushed across four sixth-inning runs to capture the opener, 11-3, but Paine College took advantage of five home errors for a 9-7 late softball contest.

Leading 7-3 after five and half innings of game one, Ja'Necia Barber lined a RBI single and Riley Jenkins was hit by a pitch with the bases load, before Makayla Cruz lofted a sac fly to plate the game-sealing FVSU (4-10) run for the eight-run rule.

Paine College trailed 2-1 when it would plated four runs in the top of the third and never trailed again. The Lions added three more in the fourth, before the Wildcats comeback attempt. FVSU scored single tallies in the fourth and fifth frames, before it pulled the margin to 8-7 when Laila Lavette hit a sac fly and Morghan Holland a run-scoring ground out. Paine plated an insurance run in the top of the seventh and held the home team scoreless in the home at bat for the win.

Holland had the hot Wildcat bat with two 3 for 4 games with a triple, double, two runs and two RBI. Hailey Bracey and Alisha Fabin both singled twice, while Amaya Pagan laced a game two triple.

Caprice Johnson fanned six as she won the opener by allowing seven hits and only one earned run over six innings of work.

FVSU has almost two weeks off before beginning play in the SIAC Crossover event in Jasper, Ala., on March 10-12.
