Wildcats Record Tough First Day of SIAC Softball Crossove

JASPER, Ala. – The Wildcats returned to the diamond for the first time in almost two weeks Thursday. Fort Valley State's seventh-inning comeback fell a run short against Miles College, 5-4, before Conference-best Spring Hill College took the late matchup, 8-0 in six innings, of the first day of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover event.

Trailing 5-2 heading into their final at bat, the Wildcats (4-12) saw Rasheedah Hasan double to center field leading off and Laila Lavette lined her own two-bagger two hitters later. Kaitlin Gardner followed with her fourth hit in four at bats to drove home Lavette and pull FVSU to within a run, 5-4. Miles College, though, retired the next two hitters to seal the win.

Spring Hill College plated five scores in the top of the sixth and held FVSU to only a Tiffany Rose fourth-inning single in the 8-0 final in six frames.

On the day, Gardner led the Wildcats hitters with four singles and two RBI. Hasan, Lavette and Rose all three doubled and singled. Jakiyra Lemmon and Riley Jankins added a hit each, while Makayla Cruz walked twice, scored a run and drove in another with a ground out in the opener.

FVSU continues with the three-day event on Friday with matchups with Lane College (1:15 p.m.) and Tuskegee (5:45 p.m.).
