Wildcats Show Strong 2nd Half, Run Past Thorobreds in SIAC 1st Round

ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Wildcats have been a team no one wants to face as the season has went on. Fort Valley State proved themselves with a strong second-half showing and ran past Kentucky State, 73-53, in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Tournament First Round.

After K.J. Doucet nailed a trey as the final first-half points, the Wildcats continued with the opening four second-period tallies for a 37-33 lead and never trailed again. FVSU turned a five-point margin into its first double-digit lead, 51-40, at 12:56. A Kenton Eskridge 3-pointer and three Doucet free throws extended the advantage to 15 points, 61-45, and FVSU coasted home the final four minutes.

SIAC Freshman of the Year, Doucet, posted his first double-double of the year with 23 points to go with 13 rebounds. Eskridge pumped in 14 points, four rebounds and a pair of assists, while backcourt mate, Pierre Mitchell connected on 9 of 12 free throws for 13 points and four assists. Center Quincy Young added 11 points and seven boards down low.

Mitchell Jacobs led the Thorobreds charge with 14 points.

Kentucky State ran out of the gates powered by four treys for a 15-7 lead in the first 4:26. FVSU, though, chipped away at the difference the rest of the first half until the intermission tie.

FVSU will now have Tuesday off, before it will take on SIAC West champion Miles College on Wednesday, March 2, in a 2:15 p.m. contest of the Quarterfinals.
