Benedict Escapes FVSU’s Clutches in Tight Battle

COLUMBIA, S.C. – It was almost a repeat of Monday night's thriller for the Wildcats. Trailing by three points, Fort Valley State was unable to get the game-tying shot up and turned the ball over with seven seconds allowing Benedict College to escape the visiting team's clutches for the 80-75 tight men's basketball win.

A K.J. Doucet 4-point play pulled FVSU (5-14/5-7 SIAC East) to within one-point, 76-75, with 56 seconds remaining. After a missed shot, Benedict College (15-5/11-2 SIAC East) put in the offensive board to make it 78-75, at 28 ticks. The Wildcats worked the ball around the perimeter on its final possession, but instead of the game-winning 3-pointer like Monday, in this case game-tying, shot did not make it off and the Tigers grabbed the turnover to seal the close win.

Doucet guided the FVSU attack with 22 points, including 8 of 8 at the foul line, to go with seven rebounds and four assists. Kenton Eskridge had his best game as a Wildcat with 17 points on 6 of 10 tries with 3 of 5 from long-range. Both Ty'Reek Johnson and Pierre Mitchell chipped in eight points.

Timothy Bing finished with a Benedict-best 22 points.

The Tigers led by as many as six points twice, 22-16 and 24-18, in the first half. FVSU, though, answered with an 8-2 spurt behind a pair of Jamal Reynolds trey to tie at 26. The final four minutes went back-and-forth until Doucet drained a triple with 21 seconds for a 38-37 visitors intermission lead.

The contest was a one-possession game switching leads four times in the first 15 minutes before Eskridge made a pair of free throws and followed with a 3-pointer for a 65-63 lead at 5:11.

Benedict recorded the largest lead of the second 20 minutes, with 2:43 showing. The Wildcats still trailed by the five-point difference, 76-71, when Doucet was fouled in the process of downing a right-wing 3-pointer. He added the free throw for a 76-75 tally to set up the final 56 seconds.

FVSU aims to return to the win column in its second trip to Columbia, S.C., on Monday night, Feb. 7. The Wildcats go across the street to face the Yellow Jackets of Allen University in a 7:30 p.m. affair.
