Wildcats Powers Past Magicians, Drop Opener to Thorobreds

JASPER, Ala. – The Wildcats added a strong win to end their weekend trip. After dropping the first game to Kentucky State, Fort Valley State rallied for a solid run-rule victory over LeMoyne-Owen to finish its SIAC Crossover final contest.

The Thorobreds took advantage of a pair of Wildcats (6-14) errors in the third frame and added a trio more in the sixth for an 8-1 morning win. FVSU found its offense in the afternoon game with three multi-run at bats on the way to an 11-1 victory in five innings over LeMoyne-Owen.

Rasheedah Hasan and Makayla Cruz guided the Wildcats offense with a combined 4 for 6, 3-run, and 7-RBI late game. Hasan doubled and singled, scored twice and drove in four runners. Cruz was 2 for 3 with a triple and double, a run and three RBI. Riley Jenkins added a double and single and two runs, while Laila Lavette was 3 for 7 with all singles. Hailey Bracey chipped in a single in each game.

Ryleigh Murray posted her first win in the circle with a five-inning victory over the Magicians. She allowed four hits and an earned run with five strikeouts.

Game 1

Trailing 5-0 in the home fifth, Jenkins, who had a lead-off walk, raced home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded for what would be FVSU's lone run. Kentucky State added three sixth-inning insurance runs for the 8-1 final.

Game 2

In the top-of-the second inning with the bases loaded, Hasan laced a base-clearing double. Cruz followed with her own double for a 4-0 lead.

The Wildcats added three more tallies in the third off back-to-back Magicians errors and a RBI Hasan single.

Leading 7-1 in the visiting fifth, Cruz lined a two-run triple and scored on a Morgan Holland single. Jenkins drove home Holland with a double. Murray held LeMoyne-Owen scoreless in the home side for the 11-1 final.

FVSU will now be off until opening SIAC East action at Allen University next Friday and Saturday, March 18-19.
