Wildcats Battle Tough, Fall in Four to Tigers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After gaining the match momentum in the second set, the Wildcats could not keep it. Fort Valley State battled tough to tie the match, but Savannah State took the women's volleyball final, 3-1.

The Lady Tigers (1-5/1-1 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference East) built a double-digit lead and rode it to an opening 25-19 set win. FVSU (1-7/0-3 SIAC East) turned a tie score, 11-11, into a 19-12 advantage and eventual 25-19 second set victory to tie the match. Savannah State, though, turned a one-point deficit into a four-point lead and a third set 25-19 final. The visitors continued the momentum into set four where they went out to an 18-9 lead, before ending the match, 25-17.

Destinee Jackson paced the FVSU attack with her season-high 12 kills to go with six digs, four blocks and two aces. Hallea Gibbs added eight kills and 12 digs. The trio of Morgan Hebert, who also posted eight digs, Morgan Gooden and Raven Edwards downed six winners apiece.

Laiani McCullough handed out 32 assists and dug 14 attacks, while libero Sarah Rosario had 16 digs.

Destinee Langston led the Lady Tigers with 13 kills.

FVSU is now off until next Wednesday, Sept. 21, in a 6 p.m. match at Claflin University.
