Claflin Uses Late Runs to Defeat FVSU Volleyball

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Wildcats were unable to hold on last Wednesday night. Host Claflin University used two late runs in the opening sets and the final three points in the third to defeat Fort Valley State in women's volleyball, 3-0.
 
The Wildcats (1-8) went out to an early 5-1 lead and led by as many as seven points, before they held a 20-18 edge. The Lady Panthers (6-0) ran off the next six points and seven of eight to win set one, 25-21. Leading by only 14-11 of set two, Claflin ran off the next 11 tallies to close out the set, 25-11. FVSU enjoyed four one-point leads with the last of 12-11 of the third set until five unanswered Claflin points erased the advantage and the home team finished the match with the final three points, 25-20.
 
On the night, Hallea Gibbs paced the FVSU attack with 10 kills and five digs. Morgan Hebert added six kills, 10 digs, two assists and a block. Laiani McCullough chipped in 21 assists, 11 digs, three kills and a block assist. Sarah Rosario dug 17 attacks on the defense.
 
Simone Newell led the Lady Panthers with 13 digs and nine kills.
 
FVSU has Thursday off before it plays five matches at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 23-24, in Cartersville, Ga.
