Wildcats Earn Split at SIAC Volleyball Opening Day

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. – The Wildcats strung together two qualities matches and narrowly missed a Friday sweep. Fort Valley State swept past Tuskegee, 3-0, before it dropped a tight, 3-2, match with Miles College at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Volleyball Crossover event opening day.
 
The Wildcats (2-9/1-4 SIAC East) used a big run in each set to overtake the Golden Tigers with scores of 25-8, 25-12 and 25-21. In a back-and-forth late affair, Miles netted the final three points of the fifth set to edge out the 15-12 win and the match after set scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-15 and 13-25).
 
Destinee Jackson paced the FVSU hitters with 24 kills with four errors in 46 attacks for a .435 hit percentage for the day, in fact she had nine kills without an error in 16 attacks in the first match. The senior also had five aces, six digs and two assists.
 
Hallea Gibbs downed a combined 16 kills, nine aces and 20 digs over eight sets of play. Raven Edwards and Morgan Hebert, who also had nine assists and three digs, both hit 10 kills in the second match. Laiani McCullough guided the FVSU offense with 48 assists, 25 digs (29 assists and 20 digs vs. Miles) eight aces, and four blocks.
 
Sarah Rosario dug 23 attacks, while Kaila Copeland added 20 digs.
 
Vs. Tuskegee

In set 1, the Wildcats turned a 6-4 deficit into an 8-6 lead of a pair of Gibbs aces. Leading 9-8, FVSU netted the final 16 points for the 25-8 final.
 
Again, FVSU trailed 7-6 only to run around the second set with an 11-1 run for a 17-8 lead before Rosario finished it with a kill, 25-12.
 
Tuskegee led set three, 20-17, but FVSU scored eight of the final nine points to end the match, 25-21.
 
Vs. Miles
 
FVSU and Miles took turns over the first four sets. Gibbs helped FVSU turn a one-point deficit into win with two aces and a kill as part of the final five points (25-21).
 
Miles ran off 10-straight points to open the second set, led 17-5 and never let its opponent back in for a 25-16 final.
 
The Wildcats bounced back and led 9-2, 11-4 and 14-5 in the early part of set number three. They went on for a 2-1 lead and 25-15 end.
 
The Bears trailed 6-3 but recorded 10 points in a row for a 13-6 lead. Leading 13-10, Miles added seven more points in a row before taking the set, 25-13.
 
Miles rode the set four momentum for the opening six match-deciding set. FVSU battled back to within a point three times at 11-10, 12-11 and 13-12, before Miles scored the final two points to end the fifth set, 15-12.
