Wildcats Push Hard, Fall to Lions in Extra Points of Set 4

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – In the second outing of the year, the Wildcats are continuing to grow together. After dropping the opening pair of sets, Fort Valley State pushed hard for the third set, before it fell to host Emmanuel College in extra points of set four of the 3-1 men's volleyball match final.

The Lions (2-4) claimed the first two sets by identical 25-16 scores. After the 14th tie at 17-17 in set three, FVSU (0-2) took advantage of a service error and then a combo block by Taviian Martin and Justin Yates for a 19-17 lead. Isaiah Fedd completed the Wildcat set win with a winner (25-23).

The visitors went out to early leads of 3-0, 6-1, 9-3 and 12-6 of the fourth set. Emmanuel pulled back into the set by outscoring FVSU, 10-5, in the next stretch to cut it to 17-16. Tied for the fourth time late into extra points, Martin teamed with Khairi Mitchell on a duo block to deadlock at 26. The Lions, though, downed two winners in a row to finish the match, 28-26.

On the night, Fedd led the FVSU charge with 19 kills on 34 attacks with six errors (.382 hit percent) to go with a team-high eight digs, three aces and three blocks. Martin added nine kills, .381 attack percent and six blocks. Yates handed out 38 assists, while he had three digs, two blocks and an ace.

Jayden Young had top Emmanuel honors with 19 kills and five digs.

FVSU will make its home 2023 debut this Friday night, Jan. 27, in a 6 p.m. match against King University (Tenn.) to start three home matches in three days over the weekend.
