Blazers Clip Wildcats in Men’s Basketball Opener

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats put the 2023-24 squad for its first test of the season Friday night. After Jamal Reynolds sank a pair of free throws to send it to overtime, Fort Valley State saw Valdosta State score, steal the next and turn it into another bucket on its way to a 74-70 win in the Gulf South Conference/Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Challenge.

Trailing by two, 66-64, after a Blazers free throw with just over 13 seconds left, Reynolds drove to the hoop on the other end to draw the foul. The senior Wildcat stepped up and sank both free throws to give the crowd at Clark Atlanta extra basketball.

In overtime, Khadim Samb gave FVSU the early lead, 68-66, with two free throws. Down 69-68, newcomer Jahlen Jack hit a jumper in the lane to give the Wildcats back the lead, 70-69. It would unfortunately be FVSU's final points. Valdosta State's Jay Rucker dunked the next possession, stole the ball and added a second bucket for a four-point turnaround and 73-70 score. FVSU's final two shots, both 3-pointers, were off the mark.

Samb paced the balanced FVSU attack with 15 points, six rebounds and four steals. Lowe added 14 points and four boards, while Jack hit 6 of 9 attempts for 13 points to go with five rebounds and five assists. Pierre Mitchell added 12 points and three assists. Khirius Doucet chipped in eight points in his first collegiate game on 4 of 8 shots.

FVSU had a tough time from the outside as it hit only 3 of 21 from 3-point range. The team also made only one of 8 overtime shots.

Rucker led the Blazers with 17 points and nine rebounds.

The Wildcats led almost the entire first half with a lead as high as seven points (13-6) on a Lowe 3-point play. FVSU also enjoyed four other six-point advantages, including a 34-28 tally off a Samb dunk in the final seconds. A late VSU 3-pointer cut the FVSU lead to 34-31 at intermission.

FVSU returns to action on Saturday (Nov. 11) in a 4 p.m. contest against the University of West Florida also at Clark Atlanta.
