Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Wildcats Fall in Tight Contest Against Argos

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats can see great potential for the 2023-24 season with a promising, but disappointing first weekend. After leading the majority of the afternoon, Fort Valley State could not tie the game to send a second game in a row into overtime as Myson Lowe's 3-pointer was off the mark and allowed West Florida to escape with the 65-62 men's basketball win.

In a came which saw 16 lead changes over the 40 minutes, FVSU (0-2) couldn't make it 17. After falling behind by five points for the third time in the final 6:40 at 65-60, Quincy Young connect on both foul shots with 15 ticks remaining. The Wildcats had one final try as Lowe, who hit 5 of 10 treys, could not make it number six with eight seconds left to tie.

On the afternoon, Lowe pumped in 24 points off the strength of his five triples and 3 for 3 at the foul line to go with four rebounds and an assist. Khadim Samb added 3 of 7 from long range for 13 points and four boards. Jahlen Jack chipped in 10 points on 4 of 6 from the floor with six rebounds and two assists. Young added four points and five rebounds.

The Argonauts (1-1) were led by Tautvydas Kupstas' 17-point game.

After West Florida made the first point of the day, FVSU rattled off the next seven with Lowe accounting for five of those for a 7-1 lead. The Wildcats enjoyed three more six-point leads in the early going until Lowe hit another 3-pointer with 6:53 left in the opening half to make it 24-17.

Trailing 27-19, West Florida put together a 9-0 run to edge ahead, 28-27, with 4:08. Down 32-28, Lowe made a running jumper in the final seconds to trail by only a point, 32-31, at half.

FVSU came out in a back-and-forth second half and held slim leads six times. The final FVSU advantage came when Lowe hit what would be his final 3-pointer at 9:42 to make it 49-48.

FVSU will now be off until it opens its home schedule next Thursday, Nov. 16, in a 7:30 p.m. home contest against Paine College.
