Doucet and Reynolds Garner Top SIAC Men’s Basketball Honors

2/25/2023 12:44:00 AM

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Wildcats' continued program growth can be seen from the talent on the team and a pair from the roster were rewarded today for their play. Fort Valley State men's basketball can boast as sophomores K.J. Doucet and Jamal Reynolds garnered major Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference major awards as the Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year.

The two FVSU starters have helped the team tie the program's most wins (13-15) in a season since it won 13 games in the 2017-18 season. The Wildcats also head into next week's SIAC Tournament as the East Division's third seed and a winning league record of 12-9.

Doucet, Reynolds and the Wildcats open their 2023 SIAC Tournament run in Savannah State's Tiger Arena on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 28). FVSU faces the winner of Saturday Round 1 matchup between Spring Hill College vs. Edward Waters game at 2:30 p.m.

After being named the Conference's Preseason Player of the Year, Doucet made the honor become a reality as the regular season Player of the Year and All-SIAC First Team member. Reynolds joins him after emerging as the league's best steal artist to earn the Defensive Player of the Year and All-SIAC Second Team status.

Doucet from Austell, Ga., burst onto the scene a year ago and has continued to elevate his game with each time to don the FVSU Blue & Gold uniform. The SIAC's top player finished the regular season where he averaged 16.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.1 steals per game. He was fifth in scoring, 11th in free throw percentage (.755 – 139 of 184) and 17th in rebounding among his league counterparts. The 2021-22 SIAC Freshman of the Year improved his scoring by  1.3 points per contest and handed out 17 more assists.

Doucet is in the middle of one of his best stretches of the year production-wise, which coincided with the FVSU team going 4-0 in the last two weeks of action. Over those four games, the 6-7 wing player averaged 19.5 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists. The three-time SIAC Player of the Week leads the Wildcats in scoring, points scored (453), field goals made (141) and free throws made (139), while he is second in rebounds (142), assists (57), steals (31) and 3-pointer field goals made (32). Doucet has scored in double figures in 26 of 28 games this season with seven 20-plus point outings with a season-best 25 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals in a December win over Lane College. He also hit for 24 and 21 points in the two games against SIAC East champion Morehouse College and 24 points in a win over SIAC West champ Tuskegee. K.J. posted one double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds against Paine College.

In his first 56 games, Doucet has netted 831 points (15.6 ppg), 72 3-pointers made, 292 rebounds (5.2 rpg), 97 assists (1.7 apg), 62 steals and 17 blocked shots.

Coming on in his second year of play, Reynolds from Atlanta, Ga., showed his defensive prowess as the league and FVSU's top defender. After swiping 28 balls in his first-year last season, the guard more than doubled it this year to 60, the SIAC's best, and tied for second in the Conference at 2.1 per game. Reynolds grabbed at least one steal in 25 of the Wildcats' 28 games, including one or more in each of the past 21 contests. His season-high of six came in a much needed effort as his final one came with FVSU down by two as he picked off an Allen University inbounds pass and raced in for the game-tying bucket off it with 11.8 seconds – his team prevailed minutes later in overtime.

Like Doucet, Reynolds has come up big the last two weeks in FVSU's regular season-ending four-game win streak where he recorded 14 steals, while he averaged 7.8 points. Along with 32 more steals this season to his credit, the second-year Wildcat also ranks seventh in the SIAC for field goal percentage at exactly .500 (66 of 132). Jamal holds a 6.4-point average to go with 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists. He has increased his numbers by 1.2 points, 0.2 rebounds and 10 more assists than a year ago.

Along with the six-steal game at Allen, Reynolds had five steals against Benedict and four swipes in both games against Savannah State. Jamal has nine games with at least three steals and has two games with nine rebounds (at North Georgia and at Central State to go with 16 outings of four or more boards.

In his first 53 games played, the top FVSU defensive player has 88 steals (1.6 spg), 311 points (5.9 ppg), 188 rebounds (3.5 rpg) and 80 assists (1.5 apg). He has also made .479 of his field goals (113 of 236).
