Tigers Edge Wildcats Saturday Late

COLUMBIA, S.C. – It was another Wildcats game to be decided in the final three minutes. Tied at 53, Benedict's Marshaun West hit back-to-back shots with a trey and jumper and Fort Valley State was unable to regain the lead it enjoyed a lot of the afternoon, in a 63-60 home men's basketball win.
 
After West's two buckets with 2:21 remaining, FVSU pulled back to within three points, 60-57, on a Jamal Reynolds driving layup at 31 seconds. Chris Volo made one of two free throws 14 seconds later to again make it a one-poessession contest, 61-58. The Tigers, though, made a pair of foul shots with 15.5 ticks, before a Wildcats tip-in by Joe Williams with 0.4 seconds made the 63-60 final.
 
Myson Lowe finished with a FVSU best 13 points to go with three steals and two assists. K.J. Doucet added 11 points with 9 of 10 free throws and JaMarcus Scott chipped in eight points with a pair of 3-pointers. Pierre Mitchell had seven points and three assists.
 
West led all scorers with 16 points and seven rebounds for the Tigers.
 
FVSU opened the contest with six of the first seven points over the initial 2:52. Scott and Lowe downed back-to-back 3-pointers for an 18-14 FVSU margin. The visitors held two six-point leads in the final eight minutes of the first half, 22-16 on a Lowe jumper and Volo dunked home the bucket for a 24-18 lead at 7:03. The Wildcats held a slim, 31-29, intermission lead.
 
FVSU completes its weekend pair of games with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Allen University Monday night, Feb. 6, back in Columbia.
