FVSU Steals Game-Tying Points, Prevails over Allen in OT

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Moments after the Yellow Jackets broadcast announcer said the nail was put in the visitors' coffin, the Wildcats arose for the victory. Trailing by four with 22.7 seconds left, Fort Valley State's Jamal Reynolds stole the inbounds pass and laid in the game-tying layup to send the men's basketball into overtime where it finished off Allen University, 76-69.

After a Yellow Jackets 3-point play gave them a 67-63 lead, K.J. Doucet was fouled on the other end of the floor with 16.6 seconds and made both foul shots. With the defense set, Reynolds swiped the ball out of the air on the inbounds pass and raced down a wide-open right side of the lane for the game-tying bucket, 67-67, at 11.8 seconds. Allen went down the court for the potential win, but Reynolds was there with his sixth steal of the game, fourth of the second half, to forced extra basketball and overtime.

Following an Allen free throw 14 seconds into overtime, FVSU netted the next nine of the 10 points over the final 4:37, including 7 of 8 free throws, for the seven-point win.

With the victory, FVSU moves to 10-15 (8-10 SIAC East) for the season and its first double-digit win total since going 13-16 during the 2017-18 campaign. Allen falls to 4-19 and 4-14 in the SIAC East.

Doucet hit all 11 of his free throw attempts and 5 of 10 from the floor for a 21-point night to go with five assists, four rebounds and a pair of steals. Khadim Samb recorded a double-double of 14 points on 5 of 9 shooting with two treys and 10 rebounds. Pierre Mitchell downed a trio of 3-pointers as part of his 11 points and Myson Lowe added 11 points. Reynolds stole a season-high six balls to go with nine points, three rebounds and three assists.

FVSU hit 25 of 51 attempts from the floor (49%) and 18 of 19 free throw tries. The visitors outrebound the Yellow Jackets, 34-28, and posted 12 team steals.

Darius Williams led Allen with 19 points.

Leading 22-17, Mitchell drained back-to-back triples and Doucet laid in a bucket as the Wildcats opened a 30-17 lead with 5:48 in the first half. After leading 38-32 at intermission, FVSU pushed the margin back to 13 points, 52-39, at 14:43 remaining.

Allen chipped away at the difference until tying and then taking the lead, 61-59, with 2:27 left. FVSU edged back ahead, 63-61, before Allen put the next six points on the scoreboard to set up the final 22.7 seconds.

FVSU stays on the road where it plays rival Albany State on Saturday night, Feb. 11, in an 8 p.m. tip-off.
