Wildcats Score Early in Opener Win, Split Versus Cavaliers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – On a beautiful afternoon in Middle Georgia, the Wildcats posted their first 2023 victory. Raven Webb drove in four runs to help Fort Valley State take the softball home opener, 8-5, but Montreat College finished the day strong with a 9-4 win of the late contest.

In her first game on Wildcat Field, Webb drove runs home in each of her first three at bats as FVSU built a 7-2 lead in the opening three frames. Both Webb and Alexia Scott doubled home runs in the first and Webb lined a two-run single in the second. Makayla Cruz drove in one with a hit and Webb finished the early scoring with a run-scoring ground out. The Wildcats rode the early advantage for the win.

Laila Leverett drove in the second FVSU (1-3) score to take a 2-0 lead with one inning of the second in the books. The Cavaliers (3-3) scored in each of their next four trips to the plate with single tallies in the second and third and two in both the fourth and fifth for a 6-2 lead. Riley Jenkins doubled home Hailey Bracey and Scott drove in a second home score in the sixth, but Montreat sealed the late game win with three in the top of the seventh.

Both Webb and Leverett recorded three hits apiece. Scott, Jenkins and E'Lisia Vickers all doubled and singled. Cruz, Bracey, Destiny Fitzpatrick, Ja'Necia Barber rounded out the Wildcats with hits.

After a bumpy first frame, Caprice Johnson settled down for the win in the Game 1 circle. The junior scattered 12 hits in seven innings where she allowed two earned runs, fanned three and didn't allow a walk.

FVSU moves on to host a Friday-Saturday, Feb. 10-11, home event where it will play Ohio Christian in the first game at 11 a.m.
