Wildcats Log Tough First Day of SIAC Softball Crossover

JASPER, Ala. – The Wildcats logged a tough opening day on the softball diamond on Saturday. Fort Valley State suffered losses to Miles College, 10-2 in five innings, and against Spring Hill College, 4-0, at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover event.

FVSU (5-11) registered its lone lead of the day in the top of the first against Miles when Raven Webb doubled home Mariah Williams, who walked, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. The Wildcats lead proved to be short-lived as the Lady Bears put four scores on the scoreboard in the second and five more in the third. Trailing 10-1, Webb received the fourth walk in the top of the fifth to plate Amaya Pagan, but FVSU could get any more runs home.

Makayla Cruz led off the first frame with a single, but FVSU could not get her home to start the contest against Spring Hill. The Badgers scored the first run off two Wildcat errors in the home third for a 1-0 lead. Webb led off the fourth with a hit, but she suffered the same fate as Cruz. Spring Hill added a trio of score in the bottom of the fifth off five hits. Webb doubled with one out in the sixth inning, but pinch runner Tyler Watson could advance no furth than third as the Wildcats best scoring effort.

On the day, Webb went 3 for 5 with a double and two RBI. Cruz, Williams, Destiny Fitzpatrick and E'Lisia Vickers all singled one time.

FVSU takes the field for Day 2 of the event on Sunday (Mar. 12) with single games against Lane at 11 a.m. and Tuskegee in a 3:30 p.m. contest.
