Wildcats Wrap up SIAC Softball Crossover

JASPER, Ala. – After a Sunday washout, the Wildcats returned to the field on Monday for a pair of contests. Fort Valley State came up on the short end against both Lane College, 5-3, and Tuskegee, 10-1 in six innings, to complete the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover softball event.

FVSU (5-12) started the last-morning matchup strong with single runs in the bottom of the first two frames highlighted by a Laila Leverett RBI double for a 2-1 lead. Lane (16-3), though, answered with four tallies in the top of the third and allowed only a second Leverette run-scoring double in the third the final five innings for the 5-3 win.

In the afternoon game, the Wildcats took the early lead again. Makayla Cruz and Mariah Williams led off the top of the first with a walk and single. Following an out, Leverett lofted a sac fly to right to bring Cruz home for a 1-0 lead. The Golden Tigers claimed the advantage with a three-run first and two in the second for a 5-1 score. Leading 6-1 in the home sixth, Tuskegee finished the game with four more runs and a 10-1 final as it held FVSU to only Cruz being hit by a pitch in the fifth and Leverette drawing a walk in the sixth as the lone base runners over the last five innings.

On the day, Williams produced 4 of FVSU's eight hits in her six at bats with two runs and a stolen base. Leverett doubled twice in the first game and added a sac fly in the late contest for three RBI. E'Lisia Vickers lined a double and Destiny Fitzpatrick a single as the two other hits.

FVSU returns home for a non-conference Tuesday (March 14) twinbill against Winston-Salem State. First pitch is 1 p.m.
