Wildcats Pounce for 5-Run Final At Bat for Late Win, Earn Afternoon Split

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats bats came alive in their last turn at the plate Tuesday afternoon. Riley Jenkins lined a two-run double and raced home two batters later Kryssi Maddox's single as Fort Valley State softball capped a five-run seventh in for the 8-7 Game 2 win over Winston-Salem State after its first-game comeback fell short, 8-4.

Trailing 7-3 heading into the home seventh, the Wildcats (6-14) saw their first four hitters reach base as Mariah Williams was hit by a pitch, Raven Webb reached on a fielder's choice and Laila Leverett singled to load the bases, before Alexia Scott plated the first run on her hit. Alisha Fabin lofted a sac fly to bring home pinch runner Selena Linsenbach to cut the deficit in half, 7-5. Jenkins followed with her two-run double to left to tie the game, 7-7. After E'Lisia Vickers singled to right, Maddox lofted the walk-off single to score Jenkins and let her FVSU greet her at home plate to celebrate the victory.

In the opener, FVSU trailed 8-2 going to the home seventh. Williams was hit by a pitch and Webb singled to start the Wildcat at bat. Pinch runner Eyndirrah Jones raced home on a Rams error before Destiny Fitzpatrick doubled home Leverett to make it an 8-4 game. Winston-Salem State recorded the final two outs on the following batters to end the game.

With the Game 2 win, FVSU snapped its seven-game losing streak heading into next weekend's SIAC East home series with Savannah State starting on Saturday afternoon (March 18) with a 1 p.m. doubleheader.

Webb paced FVSU on the afternoon with a 4 for 8 day with two doubles and two RBI. Maddox lined a double and two singles of the late game, while Jenkins doubled and singled. Williams went 2 for 3 with a double, single, two times hit by a pitch, two runs and a stolen base. Fitzpatrick and Hailey Bracey added doubles and Vickers singled twice.

With the game-winning single, Maddox gave herself the circle win. She went all seven innings where she scattered eight hits, allowed two earned runs, fanned six hitters and walked four.
