Williams Home Run Pair Powers FVSU to Win, Savannah State Evens Day Late

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats' Day started with a bang and ended silent Saturday afternoon. Mariah Williams blasted a solo and a grand slam home run to power Fort Valley State to a 13-4 in five inning opening win, before Savannah State evened the day with a 4-0 shutout for the softball split.

William belted the day's first run with a solo round-tripper to right center in the home first before she cleared the bases as part of a six-run second inning as FVSU (7-15) opened a 6-0 lead. Raven Webb, Laila Leverett and Destiny Fitzpatrick lined run-scoring singles along with an E'Lisia Vickers sac fly for four more third-frame scores, before Webb added a two-run single to right for the final pair of Wildcats runs.

After logging the final frame of the opener, the Lady Tigers' Alisyn Ferrell returned to the circle and fired a three-hit complete game shutout. The Wildcats received an Alexia Scott single in the second, a Williams bunt hit in the third and a two-out Webb double in the home sixth as their only hits. FVSU stranded all five of its runners for the game on base. Savannah State plated two in the third and single scores in the fourth and seventh innings.

Webb recorded a team-best four hits in seven at bats with a double and three RBI. Williams was 3 for 7 with the solo homer and grand slam for five RBI and two runs scored. Leverett went 3 for 3 with two runs and an RBI in Game 1 and Fitzpatrick was 2 for 4 with an RBI in the same contest. Vickers sliced a two-run single and a sac fly, while Tiffany Rose scored three times and added a single.

Caprice Johnson grabbed the opening win going three frames with an earned run and two hits.

FVSU completes its three-game series against Savannah State in a Sunday (March 19) single game starting at 1 p.m.
