FVSU Runs on All Sunday Cylinders, Shuts out Savannah State in Series Finale

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats revved their Sunday motors and took off. Fort Valley State plated seven runs over the third through fifth frames, while Caprice Johnson fired a three-hitter in the circle to take the softball series finale from Savannah State, 8-0.

With two outs in the home fifth, Tiffany Rose fought off two pitches before she lofted a walk-off single to right field to plate E'Lisia Vickers, who drove in the frame's second run on a double, to end the game with the eighth run. The Wildcats' 12-hit and eight-run attack was complimented with Johnson allowing only a single in each of the second, fourth and fifth innings and fanning four without a walk.

Four FVSU hitters recorded multiple-hit efforts. Raven Webb doubled and singled with two RBI. Hailey Bracey and Riley Jenkins both singled twice with one and two runs batted in. Mariah Williams added two hits, two runs and a stolen base. Vickers had her RBI double and scored twice. Both Rose and Laila Leverett added run-scoring hits and Makayla Cruz rounded out the dozen hits with a single and one run.

Johnson earned her second win of the weekend over Savannah State and fourth of the season. In the two games, she allowed only a single run in eight total frames of work.

Leverett started the day's scoring with a two-out infield single to score Williams, who connected on her first hit through the left side, stole second and moved to third on Webb's right-side groundout for a 1-0 lead.

Two at bats later in the third, Webb tripled the lead with a two-run double to score Williams and Cruz, who both singled to make it 3-0. Jenkins drove in a pair with a solid two-run hit in the fourth leading into the three-run home fifth to end the afternoon.

FVSU had a day off before it plays a Tuesday afternoon (March 21) twinbill at Georgia Southwestern starting at 3 p.m.
