FVSU Holds Tough Against Ga. Southwestern on Diamond

AMERICUS, Ga. – Some ways to measure the growth of a program comes in other forms than wins and losses as the Wildcats showed on Tuesday afternoon. After falling 8-0 in the opening contest, Fort Valley State used a Mariah Williams two-run homer to go ahead in the third, but Georgia Southwestern came back to take the tight game, 3-2, of the softball twinbill.

Trailing 1-0 in the top of the second with one out, Eyndirrah Jones walked before Williams blasted her third home run in the last four games to center field for a 2-1 Wildcat lead. Ga. Southwestern (24-8) tied the game in the home half of the third, before a FVSU fielding error extended the at bat and the home team took advantage with what would be the go ahead and winning run, 3-2. FVSU saw both Webb and pitcher Kryssi Maddox line singles in the top of the sixth, but it could not tie the game.

Makayla Cruz led of the afternoon with a walk and Williams sacrificed her to second, but she made it no further for the visitors. The Lady Canes (24-8) scored in each of their five at bats of the opener with single tallies in the first and second and a pair for the following three frames and 8-0 run-rule win. FVSU (8-16) saw Webb draw a one-out walk in the fourth, Jones stole second, but advance no further. The Wildcats made one more run for a score in the fifth as E'Lisia Vickers was hit by a pitch and Riley Jenkins doubled for runners on second and third only to have the final out retired after her.

For the Wildcats' six hits, Webb went 2 for 3 in the late contest as the lone multi-hit batter. Williams drove in two with the two-run homer, while Vickers and Jenkins laced doubles. Maddox complete the hitting with a single.

The FVSU game two effort may not have resulted in a win, but it was the program's top performance against one of the Peach Belt Conference's best in Ga. Southwestern.

In the circle, Maddox fanned five over six innings where she allowed only three hits and two earned runs for the hard-luck loss.

FVSU moves back to SIAC East play where it travels to Columbia, S.C., for a 3-game series at Benedict College starting with a Saturday (March 25) doubleheader in a 1 p.m. first pitch.
