FVSU Bats Come Alive, Take Opener from Benedict

COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the second conference series in a row, the Wildcats started quickly at the plate. Fort Valley State scored multiple runs three times as its bats came alive and took the softball series opener, 12-2, at Benedict College.
 
Trailing 1-0 after a frame, the Wildcats (9-17/6-8 SIAC East) pushed across four scores in the top of the second highlighted by a two-run Hailey Bracey hit. FVSU would never trail again in the contest. E'Lisia Vickers RBI double in the fourth was part of a three-run fourth and the visitors added single scores in the fifth and sixth innings, before Mariah Williams belted a two-run round-tripper in the top of the seventh to finish the scoring.
 
Game 2 of the doubleheader was suspended due to darkness in the top of the seventh with Benedict leading 11-6.
 
Both Kryssi Maddox, who doubled, and Raven Webb sliced a trio of hits and a RBI apiece as part of the Wildcat 15-hit attack where every starter had at least one to her credit. Laila Leverett and Bracey added two singles each. Williams blasted her fourth home run in just over a calendar week and Vickers lined a double.
 
Caprice Johnson earned the win in the circle where she scattered eight hits and allowed two earned runs with four stikeouts and a walk over 6.2 innings. Webb closed the door on the game fanning the final Tiger.
 
FVSU and Benedict will finish the second game at 1 p.m. tomorrow and then the full third contest of the series.
