Wildcats Score Runs in 9 Innings and Pitchers Strong in Circle to Take Pair from Yellow Jackets

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – Wildcats touched home plate in nine of 10 Saturday at bats and recorded their second doubleheader sweep of the day. With a late start due to a passing weather front, Fort Valley State pushed home 22 runs and the home pitchers allowed only six hits in the 13-0 in five frames and 9-1 in six innings sweep over Allen University on the softball diamond.

The Wildcats (11-17/8-8 SIAC East) recorded an important pair of wins behind 22 runs on 22 hits, while Caprice Johnson and Raven Webb spun the ball to a combined tune of one earned run over 11 innings with six hits, three walks and 19 strikeouts. FVSU used both their bats and legs as it scored in each at bat of the five innings of the opener and all but the second inning of the late contest.

Both E'Lisia Vickers and Webb recorded four hits apiece of the team's 22-hit attack. Vickers finished 4 for 8 on the day with three runs and three RBI, while Webb was 4 for 7 with four scores, a double and two RBI. Kryssi Maddox and Destiny Fitzpatrick added three hits each with Maddox doubling with two RBI and Fitzpatrick scoring four times as part of a 3 for 5 day. Hailey Bracy and Tiffany Rose lined two hits apiece in the opener. Eyndirrah Jones posted her first multi-hit game in her collegiate career with a 2 for 3 late contest.  Makayla Cruz and Laila Leverett rounded out the hits with each having a single, while Bri Stephens lofted a sac fly.

Johnson scattered five hits in five innings for a compete game shutout to start the day with seven strikeouts without a walk. Webb had a no-hitter until she allowed a shallow single to centerfield to the second batter of the sixth inning. Webb fanned a first-year high 12 Yellow Jackets as she struck out seven of the first eight batters she faced.

Game 1:
After a single run in the first, FVSU separated itself in the second with five more with solid baserunning for a 6-0 advantage as Webb and Maddox both lined RBI singles. Vickers contributed run-scoring hits in both the third and a two-run hit in the fourth to cap the highlights.

Game 2:
Following Webb striking out the side to start the game, Cruz laid down a bunt single, stole second and scored on Webb's hit two hitters later. Fitzpatrick added her own RBI single as it was 3-0. Jones lofted a RBI hit in the third, before Vickers, Webb, Leverett and Maddox produced four-straight singles in the sixth for the final two runs to trigger the eight-run rule.

The two teams return to Wildcat Field for the 3-game series finale on Sunday (April 2) in a 1 p.m. first pitch.
