Tigers Outlast Hard-Charging Wildcats in Marathon Fifth Set

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In easily the longest game-deciding set-in program history, the Wildcats' complete comeback slipped through its paws. After fighting off three match points and not being able to capitalize on two of its own, Fort Valley State committed two attack errors and were outlasted by Benedict College, 21-19, in set five to fall 3-2 in Friday night men's volleyball.

In the fifth set, the Wildcats (5-15/2-2 SIAC) put up four points in a row for an 8-6 lead when the teams switched sides. FVSU extended the advantage to 11-7 on a home attack error and again to 12-8. Benedict (8-6/5-3 SIAC), though, rebounded for five-straight tallies for a 13-12 lead. The Tigers had match-point next at 14-13, 15-14 and 16-15 with the visitors holding them off each time. FVSU followed with a pair of match points of its own at 18-17 and 19-18, but Benedict killed a point to tie and added the final two points on visitor attack errors to end the marathon matchup.

Isaiah Fedd proved his mettle as the top SIAC hitter with 30 kills with six errors in 56 attacks for a .429 percentage to go with 13 digs, two aces and a block. Jaxon Hicks added 12 kills and 13 digs. Taviian Martin contributed seven kills without an error in 14 attacks (.500) with a block and two digs. Justin Yates handed out 36 assists along with three kills, six digs and a block, while Jose Gallardo had 20 assists, six digs and two aces. Jaequon Henderson chipped in eight digs on defense.

Ras Jesse Delaney paced the Tigers with 36 kills but committed 12 errors in 83 attacks for only a .289 percentage.

FVSU held leads in both the first two sets. The Wildcats led 9-5 early in the first and 17-12 later only to see the Tigers turn a late 19-18 deficit into a 25-22 final win. FVSU led 12-10 in set number two before a home 7-1 spurt turned the tables and eventual identical 25-22 final.

In the third set, FVSU rallied from the small deficit and the match sat tied at 22 and then 24. A pair of Tigers attack errors gave the set to the Wildcats 26-24.

Down 7-3 in the fourth set, FVSU put eight consecutive points on the board and 11 of 12 overall for a 14-8 lead. The Wildcat margin grew to 10 points, 20-10 and 21-11, before they finished the set 25-14 and forced the game-deciding set.

FVSU has Saturday off before facing SIAC-leading Edward Waters on Sunday afternoon (March 26) in a 3 p.m. match in Jacksonville, Fla.
