Wildcats Corral Thorobreds for First SIAC Victory

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Wildcat put a 'W' in the win column of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference on Saturday. Fort Valley State used an opening late run and two early ones after it and corralled Kentucky State, 3-0, in men's volleyball.

Trailing 7-4 in the first set, FVSU (4-11/1-1 SIAC) ran off the next six points for a 10-7 lead. The Wildcats, though, finished the opening set with seven of the final eight points capped by a Justin Yates kill for a 25-18 win. Down 3-1 in the set number two, Marty Boyd pounded a kill as the final point of seven in a row as the visitors rode the run for a 25-15 win. Behind 2-0, FVSU posted the next six points, but it was the Boyd and Yates combo who blocked down the last point to close out the match, 25-21, and FVSU win.

Boyd finished the day with four kills and seven total blocks. Yates handed out 29 assists to go with two kills, three blocks, six digs and an ace. Taviian Martin led the attack with 12 kills, four digs and a block, while Isaiah Fedd hit 10 winners along with two blocks and a pair of digs. Khairi Mitchell contributed seven kills without an error in 12 attacks for a .583 hit percentage and a season-best 11 digs.

Jordan Howard led the Thorobreds with six kills.

FVSU will now be off until it hosts Belmont Abbey College next Saturday evening (Mar. 11) in a 6 p.m. first serve.
