Wildcats Get Needed Insurance Runs, Sweep Pair from Lions

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – After a week off the field, the Wildcats were able to extend their season-long win streak on Monday afternoon. Fort Valley State pushed across needed insurance runs in both softball games and swept Paine College, 7-6 and 10-8.

Leading 3-2 in the home fifth of the opener, Destiny Fitzpatrick laced a lead-off double, before both E'Lisia Vickers and Makayla Cruz lined run-scoring singles and Mariah Williams belted a two-run double to make it 7-2. FVSU (14-17) needed every run as Paine College plated four of its own before Kryssi Maddox shut the door with the game's final out for the save and 7-6 final.

After the Lions tied the late contest in the top of the fifth at 6-6, the Wildcats had the answer. Riley Jenkins lined a single to start the home at bat before FVSU took advantage of two visitors' fielding miscues and then a Maddox hard liner scored two for a three-run frame and 9-6 advantage. Williams singled home Jenkins, who was hit by a pitch, to make it 10-6 in the sixth before Raven Webb fanned the final Paine hitter after two runs had crossed to end the threat and complete the sweep, 10-8.

Of the 18 Wildcat hits, Vickers, Jenkins and Williams all went 3 for 6 on the afternoon. Williams doubled and drove in four runs, Jenkins scored three times and Vickers touched home twice. Maddox produced two singles and totaled four RBI, while Fitzpatrick had a key double. Cruz added two hits, two RBI and scored four of the team's 17 runs. Alisha Fabin chipped in a two-run RBI single in the home third of Game 2, while Laila Leverett laid down two successful bunt singles in the opener.

In the circle, Caprice Johnson evened her record to 8-8 as she logged the first 6.2 innings allowing 10 hits, two earned run, walked one and struck out six. Maddox fanned the final out for her first collegiate save. Webb relieved Maddox in the late game for the final two frames for the victory as she gave up only one hit, no earned runs and her one strike out came on the final batter.

FVSU will have another week off until it hosts Wesleyan College next Tuesday afternoon (April 18) in a 2 and 4 p.m. doubleheader.
