Benedict Edges FVSU Softball Twice

COLUMBIA, S.C. – In a makeup afternoon, the Wildcats came up just short on the diamond. Fort Valley State pushed across only a single run in its final at bat of the suspended game and fell a run short in the final contest at Benedict College, 11-7 and 7-6.

Completing the suspended game from March 25, the Wildcats (15-19/9-10 SIAC East) saw Laila Leverett race home on a wild pitch, but they could get no more with only having two outs and down five when the contest was restarted.

In the third game of the series, FVSU started strong with a Raven Webb two-run homer in the top of the first only to see Benedict answer with three in the home side and a single run in the second for a 4-2 score. E'Lisia Vickers lead-off homer and a Leverett RBI double tied it at 4-4 in the third. Riley Jenkins gave the visitors a brief lead with her own lead-off round-tripper in the fourth frame, but the Lady Tigers plated single tallies in the home fourth, fifth and sixth innings for a 7-5 advantage. Mariah Williams scored on a two-out error in the top of the seventh, but FVSU could not get another to tie the contest.

Of the 18 Wildcat hits in the two games, Webb, Makayla Cruz and Williams each accounted for three apiece. Webb was 3 for 7 with a double, the two-run homer and five RBI. Cruz was 3 for 4 in the first game with two runs and a RBI, while Williams finished 3 for 7 and four scores. Vickers drove in two runs with a home run and a single, while Leverett had a pair of RBI with a double. Jenkins added a 2 for 4 day with two runs and her first collegiate home run.

FVSU will have Friday off before it starts its final SIAC series on Saturday (April 22) with a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Albany State.
