Wildcats Hold on to Take Game 2 Against Lady Rams, Clinch SIAC Playoff Spot

ALBANY, Ga. – The Wildcats are returning to the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament! Fort Valley State suffered a disheartening, 5-4, loss in nine innings in the opener, but it saw a four-run first at bat hold up in late contest, 4-2, to split at Albany State and clinch a SIAC Tournament spot with the win.

FVSU (16-20/10-11 SIAC East) received run-scoring singles by both E'Lisia Vickers and Kryssi Maddox along with taking advantage of a trio of ASU (22-14/15-6 SIAC East) errors for a four-run opening frame in Game 2. ASU cut the margin in half with two earned runs in the second, but Raven Webb allowed only one single in each of the fourth and sixth innings for the 4-2 FVSU victory.

With the victory, FVSU improved to 10-11 in the SIAC East and clinches its third-straight SIAC Tournament spot (2019, no tournaments in 2020 or 2021, 2022 and now 2023) as one of the top four teams in the East Division. The Wildcats hold a one-game lead over the Lady Panthers of Clark Atlanta (9-12) with Sunday's single game for both remaining, but FVSU swept the season series, 3-0, on Feb. 25-26. Clark Atlanta did sweep Benedict College (10-10) in Saturday's twinbill and with a win in their Sunday single game and a Benedict loss to SIAC East-leading Edward Waters in a game yet to be rescheduled could grab the final spot.

In the first Saturday contest, the Wildcats were tough-luck losers. Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh, Destiny Fitzpatrick was hit by a pitch with one out, After the second out, Mariah Williams singled, before Vickers lined a RBI single. Webb followed with a two-run double to centerfield to tie the game, 3-3. After a scoreless eighth frame, Tiffany Rose laid down a bunt to lead off and reached on a throwing error, went to second on a Williams single and scored on another Webb double. Unfortunately, ASU used a single, a FVSU infield error and then a two-run single to win the game, 5-4.

On the day, Webb led the FVSU offensive charge by going 5 for 8 with a run, two doubles, three RBI and a stolen base. Fitzpatrick recorded a 3 for 4 second game. Vickers posted a RBI single in each contest, while Williams was 2 for 4 in the opener with three runs total in the doubleheader. Maddox and Hailey Bracey chipped in a run-scoring singles, while Riley Jenkins and Bri Stephens singled one team each.

Webb (4-3) won Game 2 where she gave up four hits, all singles, with two earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts over a complete-game seven innings.

FVSU returns to Albany for the series finale on Sunday afternoon, April 23, in a 1 p.m. contest against ASU.
