Wildcats Clip Eagles, Sweep Pair in Regular Season Finale

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats accomplished their goal of getting a few games and ending up with more runs on Tuesday afternoon. Fort Valley State wrapped up its regular season as it clipped Trinity Baptist College, 15-5 in 5 innings and 3-2.

FVSU sent its first 10 players to the plate with each reaching base and came away with nine runs on six hits and three hit batters. Kryssi Maddox blasted a two-run double in the first, E'Lisia Vickers recorded her own 2-run hit in the second and Riley Jenkins cleared the third-frame bases with a long double to left field as the biggest hits of Game 1.

The visiting Eagles pushed home single runs in the first and fourth for a 2-0 lead in Game 2. In the home fourth, Mariah Williams singled, stole second, moved to third on Vickers fly out and raced home when Raven Webb drove a single to center to cut the margin in half. With one out in the fifth, Jenkins hit a solid single to center to plate Hailey Bracey to tie the game, before Webb added a second RBI single three hitters later to go ahead, 3-2. Webb allowed only a walk in each of the sixth and seven innings, but nothing else to seal the Wildcat win.

With the sweep, FVSU improved to 18-21 in the regular season. The 18 Wildcat wins ties its most victories since they went 18-24 for the 2019 campaign.

In the two games, Williams and Webb combined for nine of the 20 FVSU hits. From the leadoff spot, Williams finished 5 for 7 with two runs and two RBI. Webb recorded a 4 for 6 day with two runs and four RBI. Jenkins went 2 for 4 with three runs, a double and four RBI. Other Wildcat multi-hit performers included Laila Leverett, Destiny Fitzpatrick and Bracey.

Caprice Johnson claimed her ninth victory (9-8) as she went 4.2 innings allowing nine hits and two earned runs. Webb (6-3) came on in relief for the last four frames where she gave up only three hits, an earned run and four walks for the late victory.

FVSU will now be off until next week's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Championship Tournament. The Wildcats game time and opponent is to be determined for the tournament to be held in Albany, Ga.
