Wildcats Battle Hard, but SIAC Tourney Stay Ends

ALBANY, Ga. –  The young Wildcats had their chances on Tuesday, but they fell short of converting enough to come out on top. Fort Valley State took on a pair of West Division squads at the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, but it fell to both Tuskegee, 12-3 in six innings, and Lane College, 7-4, in the late game.

Opening the day, FVSU (18-23) Mariah Williams singled, stole second, and advanced on a wild pitch before she scored on a Tuskegee error two batters later for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Golden Tigers answered right back with two unearned runs in the first and another in the second, before they continued with a single third-inning score and two more in the fourth to open a 6-1 lead. The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out in the fifth frame when Hailey Bracey registered an RBI walk and Laila Leverett raced home on a wild pitch to make it 6-3. Tuskegee took advantage of some mental FVSU mistakes in the sixth and ended the opening round game via run rule.

In the late afternoon elimination game, Lane College struck first with two runs on two hits in the top of the first and added one in the third to lead 3-0. FVSU struck in the home third when Williams walked to lead off and after the next two hitters were retired her teammates of Leverett, Kryssi Maddox, Makayla Cruz, Destiny Fitzpatrick and Riley Jenkins lined five-straight singles to tie the game, 3-3. The Dragons came right back with two scores in the four, before the Wildcats cut the deficit in half, 5-4, when pinch runner Eyndirrah Jones stole second and eventually scored on a Jenkins ground out. Lane pushed home two insurance runs in the sixth inning with two outs to make it 7-4. E'Lisia Vickers belted a one-out double in the sixth but was stranded. In the seventh, Maddox was robbed of what would have been a home run to lead off the at bat before Fitzpatrick blistered a liner to left field for her final out as a Wildcat.
