Four Wildcats Reap SIAC Softball Awards

ATLANTA, Ga. –  The upward direction of the Wildcat team is not by chance. Fort Valley State reaped the rewards of four quality players as Raven Webb was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Softball Freshman of the Year, Hailey Bracey Co-Elite 14 winner, Mariah Williams to the First Team and Laila Leverett on the Second Team announce Tuesday morning.
 
The four honored Wildcats and the FVSU team start their SIAC Tournament run this afternoon. As the 3rd Seed in the SIAC East, FVSU takes on 2nd Seed in the West Tuskegee starting at 12:30 p.m. held on the Gordon Sports Complex field in Albany, Ga.
 
Webb received one of the league's six major awards as the Freshman of the Year. Lane College took four of the other five awards in Head Coach Joel Worthington as the Coach of the Year, Millay Lambert garnered both the Player of the Year and Utility Player of the Year, while Jersey Cabana is the Starting Pitcher of the Year. Spring Hill College's Paityn Desmoreaux grabbed the Relief Pitcher of the Year.
 
The Elite 14 award recognized the student-athlete who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the SIAC championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. Bracey and Abigail Boudreaux of Miles College are this year's softball Co-Elite 14 recipients. Both players maintain perfect 4.0 GPAs.
 
Making her presence felt at the 'hot corner' and in the circle, Webb of Alpharetta, Ga., earned both the Freshman of the Year, but she also found her name on the All-SIAC Second Team. In 22 SIAC contests, the first-year player registered a .453 batting average with 34 hits in 75 at bats where she scored 10 runs, drove in 28, lined 12 doubles and two home runs with a .693 slugging percentage along with only two strikeouts. She hit safely in 17 of those 22 games, with 11 multi-hit and six 3-hit efforts, including an 11-game SIAC hit streak. For the year at the plate, Webb led FVSU with a .426 average, 55 hits (129 at bats), 16 doubles, 43 RBI, .597 slug percentage and struck out only three times to go with nine walks.
 
In the circle, Webb appeared in nine games with five starts where he went 3-2 over 37.1 innings with a team-best 2.44 ERA. She fanned 41 batters to 18 walks. Raven had four appearances without allowing an earned run, one with only one and two others with two, while she had five of her nine appearances only allowing one hit. On the year, Webb pitched in 63.0 innings where she went 6-3 with a 2.78 ERA with three complete games and 52 strikeouts. She held opponent batters to a .224 average.
 
Needing a win to capture a SIAC playoff spot, Webb logged a complete game where she held Albany State to four hits and two earned, while she went 3 for 3 at the plate with two RBI in the 4-2 victory.
 
Carrying a perfect 4.0 in the classroom, Bracey from Fairburn, Ga., has played in 33 FVSU games this season with 30 starts. The sophomore has a .250 average at the plate with 18 hits in 72 at bats with 18 runs scored, one double, nine RBI, 10 walks and nine stolen bases.

In her first season at 'The Valley,' Williams of Griffin, Ga., solidified the left side of the Wildcat infield as she earned the SIAC's top short stop on the First Team of the position. In 21 SIAC contests, Mariah amassed a .391 average with 25 hits in 64 at bats with a team-high 24 runs, three home runs and 16 stolen bases. Williams hit safely in 17 of 20 conference games with six multi-hit outings, including a two-home run, five RBI game against Savannah State. For the season, the junior posted 41 hits in 108 at bats for a .380 clip with 39 runs, three doubles, two triples, four home runs, 22 RBI, .556 slug percentage, .504 on-base percentage, 16 times hit by a pitch, 12 walks and 22 stolen bases. She also had one 10-game hit streak and 14 of 15 contests in the stretch with eight multi-hit and two three-hit games.

After making her first appearance on the All-SIAC Second Team as a freshman, Grovetown's Leverett repeats on the Second Team in 2023 at Designated Player. Leverett hit .266 with 17 hits in 64 at bats over 22 SIAC contest with six runs, three doubles, nine RBI and 11 walks. Laila hit safely in 11 SIAC game with 3-hit games against both Clark Atlanta and Savannah State and two hits versus Lane College. Over 39 games for the season, Leverett posted a .299 average with 32 hits in 107 at bats where she scored 15 runs, lined six doubles, homered once and drove in 13.
