Wildcats’ Ellington Named 2023 HBCU College Football Preseason All-America

8/14/2023 10:49:00 AM

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. – The Wildcat return game should be in good hands this fall. Fort Valley State's Hakeem Ellington was named to the 2023 HBCU college football Preseason All-America team presented by BOXTOROW as both punt returner and return specialist.

Ellington and Benedict College's defensive lineman Loobert Denelus are the lone Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players to make the HBCU Preseason All-America team.

The wide receiver from Summerville, S.C., returns to the Wildcats after he earned 2022 All-SIAC Second Team as a punt returner. He also enters this fall as the 2023 Preseason All-SIAC First Team Punt Returner.

Last season, Ellington returned 16 punts for 110 yards with a long of 32 yards. He also ran back 11 kick-offs for 248 yards for a 22.55-yard per return average and a long of 49 yards.

As part of the offense, the senior pulled in 11 passes for 175 yards with two touchdowns. He recorded a 15.91-yard per catch average.

FVSU opens its 2023 schedule in the Red Tails Classic on Sunday night, Sept. 3, in a 7:30 p.m. kick-off against Tuskegee University with the action live on ESPNU.

BOXTOROW has named All-America teams since 2007 based on voting by national media who cover HBCU football.
