Wildcats Open 2023 Victorious, Take Down Panthers

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The best way to start the first event of the 2023 fall season! Fort Valley State women's volleyball started slow Friday night, but it was able to take down visiting LaGrange College, 3-1, behind Hallea Gibbs' 24 kills.

FVSU (1-0) overcame seven-point opening set deficit to outlast LaGrange, 27-25. The Wildcats followed with a much better 25-15, but the Panthers scored set three's final six points for their only set win, 22-25. FVSU went out to a seven-point advantage, 12-5, in set four and never gave it up for the 25-21 final.

Gibbs downed her career-high 24 kills on 46 swings with only four errors for a .435 attack percentage and finished with a double-double with 11 digs. Laiani McCullough guided the attack with 39 assist to go with 10 digs and seven kills. Newcomer Laila Hilton added seven kills and two blocks. Sara Rosario chipped in 17 digs and two aces.

Meredith Orton led LaGrange with eight kills.

FVSU returns home for its second home match of the weekend and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3) against Allen University. First serve is 2 p.m.
