Wildcats Show Mettle, Takes SIAC Opener from Yellow Jackets

FORT VALLEY, Ga. – The Wildcats held tough in each Sunday afternoon set and saw the success from it. Fort Valley State trailed in each set, but it won three of the four sets and took its Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener over Allen University, 3-1.

The Wildcats trailed by at least thee points in all four sets and by at least five in the first and third to the Yellow Jackets. Allen registered the day's first five points, but FVSU bounced right back to tie the first set, 7-7, and saw Nia Mack down a kill and followed with a pair of aces for a 16-13 lead before a 25-18 final.

FVSU trailed 10-7 and 12-9 early in set number two but it used a five-point run to edge ahead, 16-13, and never lost the advantage to the 25-20 win. Allen put together its best set as it took 13 of the opening 18 points and weathered a 9-1 home run and extended the match with the 25-20 win. After trailing early 4-1, the Wildcats, again, reversed the trend and went ahead, 12-7. Leading by only a point, Sarah Rosario lined a service ace and Hallea Gibbs hit a winner to give FVSU a 19-14 lead and help to end the match, 25-23.

With the victory, FVSU opens its SIAC docket on the positive side of the win-loss column for the first time in four seasons since it defeated Albany State, 3-2, on Sept. 11 of 2018. The Wildcats also have a 2-0 mark to start the season for the first time since they opened 2-0 for the 2016 campaign with wins over Brewton Parker and Wesleyan College.

In the match, Gibbs led the offensive with her second double-digit kill match of the weekend with 10 to go with 12 digs and two assists. Freshman Laila Hilton added nine kills and six block assists. Raven Edwards chipped in eight kills and three digs.

Laiani McCullough handed out 31 assists and added 12 digs for her second double-double to go with three kills, three aces and six block assists. Rosario dug 13 attacks, lined three aces and had two assists.

Mack and Kaila Copeland both served four aces apiece.

FVSU returns to action on Tuesday evening, Sept. 5, in a 5 p.m. home match with Agnes Scott College.
